This course provides an introduction to teaching. If you already work, or want to work, as a teacher/trainer in the Further Education or Skills sector this course could be for you.

It can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers, such as:
• Individuals not currently teaching or training; achievement of the qualification does not require practice other than micro-teaching
• Individuals new to teaching or training
• Individuals currently working as assessors who wish to learn about teaching

Content and structure
There are four mandatory units in this course, covering the following topics:
• The teaching role and responsibilities
• Ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment
• Relationships with other professionals
• Planning, delivering and evaluating inclusive teaching and learning
• Types of assessment
• Quality assurance and the legal and good practice requirements in relation to assessment

Delivery and duration
This course is delivered via blended learning utilising e-learning, participation in a face-to-face training day and distance assessment.
The course is self-paced and you have up to 6 months to complete it, although the actual time will be dependent on your access to an audience for your micro-teaching and your personal motivation.

Support
Throughout the course you will receive support from the YSD team, including:
• Technical support in relation to accessing the e-learning and using the online learning management system
• Access to your tutor/assessor, the Learning Support Officer and the Curriculum Manager who collectively will be able to offer you help, advice and guidance in relation to the course content, the training venue and facilities, assessment and any adjustments required, and anything else you want help with!
• Distance tutorials to assess your initial requirements and goals, reflect on your achievements and challenges to date and on your next steps

Assessment
You will be assessed remotely through the following assessment methods:
• Written questions and discussion with your assessor
• Practical demonstration (via video) of a micro-teaching session (15 minutes)
• Written worksheets

Accreditation
You will receive the YMCA Level 3 Award in Education and Training following successful completion of the assessment tasks.

Entry requirements
You will need to complete an initial assessment to indicate your personal skills in language and literacy, numeracy and ICT (information and communication technology). This is performed through the completion of a worksheet.

Progression
After achievement of the qualification you may progress to a vocational assessor qualification to enable you to assess learners’ vocational achievement, or to a level 4 qualification in education and training.
